How the department is trying to catch up

Haut-Rhin is distinguished from the other departments of the Grand-Est by a more active circulation of the coronavirus, hence the increased efforts to make up for a relative delay in vaccination. If the trend has been improving for a few days, the Alsatian department nevertheless remains the red lantern of the Grand-Est, with an incidence rate of 197.9 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data published on Friday, reaching 291, 6 in the agglomeration of Mulhouse, against 120.3 for the whole region and 160.6 at the national level. The complete vaccination rate is also the lowest of the ten departments of the Grand-Est, at 63.3% against 70.2% in the Bas-Rhin.

“There are times when you don’t want to stand out …”, sighs Pierre Lespinasse, regional delegate of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Grand-Est, at the entrance of Vacci’Mouv, an itinerant vaccination system that has been crisscrossing the parking lots and forecourt of Haut-Rhin since the beginning of August. “Why the Haut-Rhin? No one can explain it to himself, “said Pierre Lespinasse, nevertheless recalling that Mulhouse” ticks the boxes of proximity and promiscuity “, favorable to the circulation of the virus.

“Today, contaminations occur in families, this is what makes the incidence rate higher in Mulhouse in particular, since it is a younger population, a little more precarious, with greater promiscuity” , suggests Doctor Frédéric Tryniszewski, president of the territorial professional health community (CPTS) of the Mulhouse agglomeration.

A border area of Germany and Switzerland

“We do not find a single explanation,” adds Alain Charrier, sub-prefect of Mulhouse, also evoking the important mixing of populations in this border area of Germany and Switzerland. If the anti-health pass demonstrations bring together relatively more people in Colmar and Mulhouse than in Strasbourg, Metz or Epinal, the wearing of the mask, again compulsory in the city center of Mulhouse, is respected and there is “very little of verbalizations ”during the application checks of the health pass, underlines the sub-prefect.

With the Vacci’Mouv, an imposing white truck transformed into a mobile vaccination center, different from the bus that went to meet the elderly in the spring, “the idea is to be visible in places of passage. As yesterday Monday, near the high school in Saint-Louis or last Friday in the parking lot of a commercial area in Kingersheim, north of Mulhouse. The Vacci’Mouv should continue its roaming until the end of November. Free and without appointment, the Vacci’Mouv carried out an average of 140 vaccinations per day.

“We are not in huge numbers […] but we reach the public we are looking for: people who would not have gone to the vaccination center by doing the procedure themselves, ”emphasizes Dr. Tryniszewski.
