The day the neighbor asked for a handful of cornmeal was the low point in Alice and Collins Atieno’s marriage. As Collins Atieno reached into the flour container, he came across a pack of tablets. The names on the label meant nothing to him, but the existence of a palm-sized pill box in the cornmeal definitely seemed a troubling sign to him. On the same day he learned from a neighbor that the medicine from the kitchen corner was being used against AIDS. When his wife got home, Collins Atieno was waiting with the pill box. She fled in lies, he struck. Again and again.
