How Laury Thilleman, Miss France 2011, saw the fact that her grandmother no longer recognized her

The recent revelation of a link between Covid-19 and Alzheimer’s raises fears, in the years to come, of a wave of new victims of the “disease of forgetting”. But many families are already affected by this condition which affects more than a million people in France. Laury Thilleman, Miss France 2011, testifies to this since her “granny Yvonne” has been suffering from the terrible disease for ten years.

“We feel helpless”

“The first symptoms are quite insidious, so we say to ourselves that it is old age that makes him lose his means,” recalls Laury Thilleman. Then come more marked… and more dangerous demonstrations: “Grandma Yvonne started driving at 50 km/h on the motorway and 110 km/h in town”. From then on, the cruel question of care arises: “We were helpless, confirms the young woman. We were wondering if we should assist her ourselves or place her in a specialized place”.

“Today, we don’t have too many discussions, but we sing, we dance. Poetry, songs, especially love, today are the only moments of real connection that I have with my grandma and that… it doesn’t escape, oddly. So, I keep it preciously, ”smiles the ex-Miss France.
