Treasure lies buried off Israel’s coast. When this treasure was discovered a few years ago, then Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of a “gift from God” and prophesied that the country would soon become a “significant energy power on the international stage”. In fact, the gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean are now being vigorously exploited, but largely only for domestic use. Now, however, the dream of energy power could get a new, powerful impetus. After all, Europe is urgently looking for alternatives to Russian gas. “For Israel,” says Gina Cohen, “this is a golden opportunity.”
