Israeli researchers have managed to grow cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes and fruit in the Negev desert. The biologist Simon Barak now wants to find out whether this is also possible on the moon.

Simon Barak looks down on the desert from a high vantage point. A light wind is blowing at the grave of David Ben-Gurion, the founder of the state of Israel, who found his final resting place here in the Negev. And directly behind this burial ground, a barren crater landscape opens up: deeply cut valleys with bare mountain slopes in endless shades of brown. Rocks and dust as far as the eye can see. “Like a lunar landscape,” says Simon Barak – and he says it with pride and joy.
