US actor Kevin Spacey (62) has to pay the “House of Cards” makers more than 30 million dollars (around 27 million euros) for losses that have arisen since 2017 when he left the Netflix series. This emerges from an arbitration court decision that became final on Monday.

The reason: Spacey had in all five seasons of “House of Cards” both as an actor and as a producer violated the requirements set in his contract for his professional behavior. The verdict came after more than three years of litigation and an eight-day evidence hearing, which, like the rest of the dispute, were kept secret from the public.

Spacey appealed the decision to a panel of three other private arbitrators, but the plaintiffs were right. The current decision on Monday is therefore final.

MRC, the studio behind “House of Cards,” had to stop production of the series’ sixth season after Spacey’s layoff, rewrite it to remove Spacey’s main character, and cut it from 13 to eight episodes to meet the deadlines. That led to losses in the tens of millions, according to the court document.

The Hollywood star’s lawyers unsuccessfully argued that Spacey’s actions weren’t a major contributor to the series’ losses.

MRC prevailed, followed this case tenaciously, and got the right result in the end, plaintiffs’ attorney Michael Kump said in a statement.

Spacey’s career came to an abrupt end in 2017 after several men accused him of sexually abusive behavior in the #MeToo debate.

Netflix ended the collaboration with him, he was cut out of the Hollywood film “Alles Geld der Welt” (2017) and replaced by Christopher Plummer (1929-2021).

However, he was never convicted in court. The only criminal case brought against him, an indecent molestation charge of an 18-year-old, was dismissed by the Massachusetts prosecutor in 2019.
