Höhenkirchen – breakfast like at grandma’s – district of Munich

Martin Wölfl has created his very personal favorite place with the café of the same name in the center of Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn. The 33-year-old grew up in the house at Rosenheimer Strasse 11a, where he often sat next to his grandmother Juliana as a child. He values freshly prepared food and regional products and wants his café to become a second living room for every guest.

It’s cozy here, lime green plant pots, each with a brightly colored tulip, hang from the ceiling, small tables stand in front of the continuous bench on the wall, the large cake cupboard draws attention to itself. The guest room seats 35 and merges into Gabriele Wölfl’s flower shop. Here, the so-called living room with old pillows and kitchen utensils is reminiscent of Grandma Juliana. You should reserve a table there.

If you order breakfast at your favorite place, you will find plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables on your plate.

It hardly takes a minute and you can choose from the wooden board which of the seven breakfasts you want. The “Martin special”, consisting of a croissant with boiled ham, scrambled eggs and bacon, arouses curiosity and even the small breakfast includes fruit. The “Favorite Place” breakfast and the “Vegetarian Plate” prove to be a feast for the eyes and the palate. Salami and ham or cheese are grouped around small bowls, lovingly decorated with lettuce leaves, grapes, strawberries and finely chopped apple slices and whet the appetite for healthy snacking. The focus is on tomato with mozzarella and salmon. The latter convinces even critical tongues, which is due to the spring onion rings and the thin slices of orange and cucumber.

The vegetarian variant comes up with camembert with currant jam and melon under a slice of cheese. The grain roll that goes with it is heart-shaped. The desire to replace the hard-boiled egg with scrambled eggs is fulfilled and rewarded: you don’t expect so many spring onions, cucumbers and peppers at a breakfast. Martin Wölfl also prepared this freshly with pleasure in the tiny little kitchen.

The café operator is actually a landscape gardener and has worked in retail and at the airport. When the rooms next to his mother Gabriele’s flower shop became vacant, they both created their “Favorite Cafe”. They were able to open it in May 2020, slipped straight into the Corona lockdown, but have not regretted their investment to this day. Breakfast is still available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., from May – with an expanded range – then from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. After that, the weekly menu with small dishes applies.

You can also tell from the drinks that attention is paid to detail here. Martin Wölfl relies on coffee from the family company Supremo in Unterhaching. If he prepares the cappuccino with just one espresso, it runs down the throat extremely mildly, with two it has a strong coffee taste. The “Golden Gundi” and the “Golden Zenzi” turned out to be a real surprise. Served in a glass, this frothed coconut milk with turmeric, vanilla and ginger offers a velvety, intense taste of orange or, as a “zenzi”, of coconut blossom sugar. Conclusion: definitely try it!
