His canoe overloaded, a miner dies during the crossing

New drama in the Channel. A minor migrant died during an attempt to cross this arm of the Atlantic Ocean which separates England from France. Another, injured, was airlifted to a hospital, the maritime prefecture announced on Saturday. This new death brings to 47 the number of exiles who died in these crossing attempts in 2024.

An overloaded boat requested assistance on Saturday morning and emergency services recovered 14 people on board, including this deceased person, whose age and sex are not yet known, and the injured person who was airlifted to the hospital in Boulogne, reported the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea.

La Premar specifies that it is not a shipwreck, the deceased having been found in the boat, not in the water. The rescue operation took place between 8 and 9 a.m. on Saturday. The other passengers in the boat continued their journey towards England.

On the night of September 14 to 15, eight migrants were killed in the sinking of a boat which had just left the French coast. On September 3, at least twelve others died when their boat broke apart.

The year 2024 is the deadliest since the beginning of the phenomenon of Channel crossings by “small boats”, the name given to these makeshift inflatable boats, in 2018.
