The writer and director Herbert Achternbusch is dead. According to a media report, he died at the age of 83.

Herbert Achternbusch (1938-2022) is dead. The German writer, painter and director died earlier this week. This is reported by the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on January 13, citing friends and companions of the deceased.

Scandal about “The Ghost”

Achternbusch, who was born in Munich, grew up with his grandmother in the Bavarian Forest. His works include countless films, plays, books and paintings – including “Bierkampf” from the 1970s.

With “The Ghost” the director caused a real scandal in the early 80s and was accused of blasphemy. He was often compared to Karl Valentin (1882-1948). “Deutsche Welle” referred to Achternbusch in 2016 as one of the “most interesting and daring German directors” of the 1970s and 1980s.
