The Federal Statistical Office publishes data on sleep: Which age group sleeps the most? What about couples with children? And has the amount of sleep increased in the population?

According to statistics, couples with children in the house get less sleep. They slept on average 8 hours and 15 minutes – 19 minutes less than couples without Children, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced. The data refer to the so-called time use survey for 2022. “Single parents also sleep less on average, at 8 hours and 22 minutes, than those living alone without children, at 8 hours and 32 minutes, although the difference is smaller here at 10 minutes,” it said.

According to the data, however, citizens slept a little more overall than they did ten years ago: the average duration for people aged 10 and over was 8 hours and 37 minutes. According to the information, this was 8 minutes more than in the 2012/2013 survey. The average sleep duration increased in all age groups, it said. “The extent to which the corona pandemic influenced sleep duration and time use in 2022 cannot be quantified on the basis of the survey.”

It is hardly surprising that people get more sleep on weekends: according to statistics, they slept an average of 9 hours and 15 minutes on holidays and weekends, almost an hour more than on weekdays (8 hours and 20 minutes).

Sleep duration increases again in retirement

And what about sleep duration in the different age groups? “If you look at sleep duration by age, it was shown in 2022 that children and adolescents under 18 slept the most, with an average of 9 hours and 42 minutes,” say the statisticians. According to the data, the group of 18 to 29 year olds already slept around an hour less per day (8 hours, 47 minutes). For people aged 30 to 64, sleep duration was almost another half an hour lower at 8 hours and 20 minutes. Older people (aged 65 and over) then sleep longer again, according to the data. Their average sleep duration was 8 hours and 46 minutes.

The Federal Office announced the data on the occasion of the national sleep day of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine next Friday (21 June).
