The very large demonstrations on Saturday against the new health rules will not have had much effect on deputies and senators. The extension of the health pass was definitively adopted on Sunday evening. The National Assembly ended the parliamentary marathon started Tuesday with a large vote, with 156 votes for, those of the majority and the right, 60 against, from the left and the RN, and 14 abstentions. A bit provocative, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran welcomed the “rediscovered national unity”, after sixty hours of discussions in total in the two chambers. Because shortly before, it was the Senate, dominated by the right, which had approved by 195 votes for, 129 against and 17 abstentions the same text.
But who has power in Tunisia this Monday? The situation is indeed particularly confused and tense, the main party in power, Ennahdha, even denounces a “coup”. President Kais Saied decided Sunday evening to freeze the work of Parliament for thirty days and to grant himself executive power, after a day of demonstrations. The thousands of protesters notably demanded the “dissolution of Parliament”. The president also announced that he had dismissed the head of government Hichem Mechichi from his post.
He was however the favorite of the Tokyo Olympics triathlon run very early this Monday morning. But, Vincent Luis finished far, far from the podium. Thirteenth more than a minute behind Norwegian winner Kristian Blummenfelt, he therefore failed to erase the disappointment in Rio, where he took 7th place after having attacked the race on foot in the lead. His two world championship titles acquired since (2019 and 2020) had further strengthened his ambitions, but “the Games, there is a date and we must be ready. I was not, ”he admits.
