According to Health Minister Spahn, a vaccine for children under 12 will be available from the first quarter of 2022. A STIKO recommendation is likely to take longer, however. Meanwhile, the incidence is rising again slightly.
Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn expects approval for a corona vaccine for children at the beginning of next year. “I am assuming that the approval for a vaccine for children under twelve years of age will come in the first quarter of 2022,” said the CDU politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Then we could protect the younger ones even better.”
STIKO recommendation will take longer
At the same time, the minister pointed out that time could again pass between approval and a vaccination recommendation by the STIKO. “A recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission will also come a little later in this case,” said Spahn.
BioNTech, for example, announced a few days ago that it would apply for approval of its corona vaccine for children between the ages of five and eleven in the coming weeks. Study results are therefore already available and only need to be prepared for the approval authorities. Production is already being prepared by the company. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had announced that it could not yet give a timeframe for a possible approval.
Incidence is rising again
The downward trend in the number of infections has, however, stopped for the time being. After falling for six days in a row, the 7-day incidence has now increased slightly. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week at 71.0. For comparison: the previous day the value was 70.5, a week ago it was 81.9.
The health authorities reported 3736 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. A week ago the value was 5511 infections. According to the new information, 13 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 12 deaths.
