The current corona situation has a massive impact on the situation of the health authorities. The previous measures would not show any effects, according to the head of the health department in Frankfurt.

Given the high incidences, they are in great demand again: the health authorities. The daily reports of new infections arrive here. But that is not the only reason why there has been a state of emergency there since the beginning of the pandemic. What challenges do the employees face.

No effects from the previous measures

“The situation challenges us,” says Peter Tinnemann, head of the health department in Frankfurt in an RTL interview. The steadily increasing number of infections and the fact that previous measures have shown no effects is “what impresses us”, he describes the current situation. The health authorities want politicians to have more “leverage” so that the numbers go down again.

Length and closeness of contact are crucial

It’s a very simple formula: contacts are about length and closeness – and the contacts that meet a lot of these criteria must be reduced again, says Tinnemann.

The vaccination protects against severe disease or death, but there are certainly enough vaccinated people in the intensive care units. But here it is necessary to check: “Who are they actually? Who are the ones that we now have to vaccinate first?” Tinnemann advocates the priorities for boosting as with the first vaccination at the beginning of the year: risk groups should have priority and vaccination should be more targeted.

Christmas markets as risky events?

The head of the Frankfurt health department looks at the Christmas markets with some skepticism. These would take place outside and the stalls would be spaced apart – but if it gets too tight, the health authorities would have to act. Actually, people would know what to do. But: “We’ll watch that now,” Tinnemann promises.

Frankfurt Health Department: “Team is getting tired”

“We have so many other tasks and we still have to do Corona,” complains the head of the health department. For almost two years everything has revolved around the task of protecting the population from the virus. Everyone did it with full speed, but “The team is getting tired – a little more tired every day,” he admits in an interview.
