He makes his clip in cartoon thanks to tutorials on YouTube

The music video for “Trash for legacy” by the band Efyx is an animated film directed by the lead singer. – Efyx

  • Lille rock band Efyx, like many others, has put their live activity on hiatus in 2020 due to the coronavirus.
  • The singer took advantage of the successive confinements to learn the techniques of animation thanks to the Internet.
  • He then directed the entire animated film which features the second extract from the group’s last album.

A new example of profitable confinement. For lack of stage, lack of venue, lack of audience, the core business of many musicians has stopped beating since the start of the coronavirus crisis a year ago. And the Lille group Efyx has not passed through the cracks of the decree which makes live culture a non-essential activity. Failing to pogot the crowds, the leader of the band, François-Xavier Savary, took advantage this year to learn animation in order to realize
the clip of the last single of his group.

The year 2020 of Lille group Efyx had to be well loaded with, in particular, the release of his second album, Trash For Legacy, followed by a tour with a bunch of dates booked in different festivals. But the coronavirus epidemic has come to put all that to the ground. Suddenly, nothing more on the program and no visibility on the future in the short term. So certainly, the three members of the group have tried, like many others, to tweak a few things compatible with health restrictions: livestreams, lockdown sessions … Except that it is not worth a good set of big sound in front of an audience that jumps all over. “We said to ourselves that anyway, we were going to release the album in 2021 with a new challenge to take up, to make a cartoon clip,” explains François-Xavier Savary.

Over 900 hours for a 3 minute film

Nothing crazy a priori, except that the idea was to do the job himself knowing that the singer, 40 years old, has not drawn since high school. “It took me three months. I was fully trained using tutorials on YouTube for everything related to animation techniques, ”he says. Training included, it took François-Xavier Savary nine hundred hours to finalize his three-minute animated film which features Trash For Legacy, the second single from the eponymous album. “It’s clearly not a Pixar film but I’m proud of the result. It moves, it’s alive, it’s aesthetic. I managed to transcribe this universe which is specific to us and which we already saw in the clips of our other songs, ”he continues.

If the writing of the album is post-pandemic, the fact of having produced the clip in offset allowed Efyx to include the health crisis about it. ” Trash For Legacy, waste as a legacy, it is an observation of what we have been left and what we will leave to future generations. It is a great whole of which is part the “too late” climatic, theme of this album, and the pandemic ”, details the singer.

Chances are the cartoon will make its appearance again in other clips of the group. “I want to keep this universe in common thread. This time, the project would be to mix traditional film and animation ”, imagines François-Xavier Savary. Enough to keep Efyx busy while waiting for the next concert dates, “end of 2021, beginning of 2022”.
