Beach volleyball player Laura Ludwig and diver Patrick Hausding will carry the German flag into the national stadium in Tokyo at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. This was announced by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) on Thursday (July 22nd, 2021). For the first time, there is both a flag bearer and a flag bearer at an opening ceremony.
Ludwig and Hausding prevailed against dressage rider Isabell Werth and table tennis player Dimitrij Ovtcharov, among others, in a choice, half of which was made by the athletes and half by the fans. The opening ceremony on Friday (23.07.21 /from 12.50 p.m. in the live center at sportschau.de) is likely to be a high point in their careers for both of them – and is already considered a great day for equality.
Hauke: “A strong symbol for equality”
“This is great and totally up-to-date, exactly the right, strong symbol for equality with a large media presence,” said two-time Olympic hockey champion Tobias Hauke in advance of the announcement. The 33-year-old from Hamburg was also an option.
“For the first time, as many women as men start in Tokyo,” said DOSB CEO Veronika Rücker. “The athletes have worked and fought for a long time. The flag bearer duo is a great opportunity to make this success visible.” Because inequality was not a purely German problem, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had encouraged the delegations to make use of the dual leadership that was permitted for the first time.
