Hardened confinement in Guadeloupe, storm and heat wave alert and hospitals under tension

Did you miss the early morning news? We have concocted a recap to help you see more clearly.

As containment had been reinforced Tuesday in Martinique, it is no surprise that Guadeloupe received the same news on Wednesday. The island was just waiting to know the details of the new restrictions. Extension of the curfew, movement within a radius of 5 km, “non-essential” shops closed: confinement will therefore be tightened in the department from Friday until September 1. It must be said, recalls the prefect, that “the epidemic is becoming catastrophic”. It reached “incidence rates never before known anywhere on the territory of the French Republic (…) with almost 1,900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants”. And it’s not over. To show the government’s support, the Minister of Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, is also currently in the West Indies. He will be joined there this Thursday by Olivier Véran.

Prepare your ears, the sky is going to snap this Thursday. Météo-France is maintaining nine departments this morning in orange vigilance. The Ain, the Rhône, the Loire, the Haute-Loire, the Haute-Savoie, the Savoie and the Isère are there for risk of thunderstorms. In two other departments, on the other hand, it will be necessary to drink a lot of water. A heat wave alert indeed concerns Drôme and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. More details here.

Even if it is less catastrophic than in Martinique or Guadeloupe, the situation on the health crisis front is also far from good in the rest of France. The number of hospitalized Covid-19 patients continues to increase, according to figures released by health authorities. Hospitals welcomed 9,233 people sick with Covid-19 on Wednesday, including 773 new people admitted between Tuesday and Wednesday. Critical care services, which treat the most seriously ill patients, have 1,745 patients (including 158 in 24 hours), against 1,712 the day before and 1,371 a week earlier. This indicator had fallen below the threshold of 1,000 on July 7, before starting to climb slowly. Like every day, the Delta variant is singled out in this new wave.
