King Harald is still in the hospital, the Norwegian royal family announced on Wednesday. Son Haakon is replacing him this week.

The Norwegian Palace has published an update on the health of King Harald V (86). On his website the royal family announced on Wednesday (May 10) that the monarch remains in hospital.

The king is on sick leave this week

The court announced in a short press release: “His Majesty the King is still at Rikshospitalet.” It said: “The king is recovering but will be on sick leave for the rest of the week.”

On Monday (May 8), the palace announced that King Harald would be treated for “a few days” in Oslo hospital for an infection. His son, heir to the throne Haakon (49), represents him. The state visit from Italy can therefore take place as planned. On May 11th and 12th, Italian President Sergio Mattarella (81) and his daughter Laura Mattarella (56) will be guests in Norway.

Exactly what Harald is suffering from has not been announced. The palace called his health “stable” on Monday. Harald’s daughter Princess Märtha Louise (51) said at the premiere party of the series “Halvors eventyrlige verden” in an interview with the newspaper “VG”: “He’s fine.”

concern for the king

In Norway, however, there is growing concern about the monarch, who has been on the throne since 1991. It is the third time in seven months that he has been in the hospital. Already in August and December 2022 he had to be treated for an infection. And even before that, the monarch’s health kept troubling him: in March 2022 he had tested positive for the corona virus.

In 2005 and 2020 he underwent surgery to replace a heart valve. In 2003 he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and had his bladder removed. Harald has also suffered from breathing difficulties and knee problems in recent years. He now only leaves the house with a walker.

Will he be fit again after his recent illness by mid-June? Then he wants to visit the Danish Queen Margrethe (83) with his wife, Queen Sofia (85). The plan is to arrive on the royal ship “Norge”.
