The defending champion from Magdeburg stays on the heels of table leader THW Kiel. Hans Lindberg is now the league’s record scorer. National coach Alfred Gislason speaks out with a critic.

The exciting fight for the title in the Handball Bundesliga continues unabated. Chaser SC Magdeburg kept up the pressure on THW Kiel with a narrow 30:28 (16:15) victory in the top game against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, who prevailed 35:26 (18:12) against HC Erlangen. In the table, the record champions from Kiel (51:9 points) continue to lead ahead of the defending champions from Magdeburg (51:11).

“It was a lot of gags, but that’s sausage for me,” said Magdeburg’s trainer Bennet Wiegert on Sky. The 41-year-old praised his team’s “attitude” and “will to fight”. Flensburg’s backcourt player Mads Mensah Larsen was disappointed that with three games and six points behind Magdeburg, a place in the Champions League is, realistically speaking, no longer achievable. “It’s really annoying,” said the Dane, whose team had reduced the lead to 28:29 in the final minute.

From the start, the people from Kiel were the dominant team. The guests only kept up to 5:6 (13th minute). After that, the host pulled away to 21:13 (33 rd ) shortly after the break. Erlangen’s Stephan Seitz saw the red card (42′) after a tough effort against Kiel’s left winger Yannick Fraatz. HCE coach Raul Alonso, who worked as an assistant coach at THW from 2010 to 2015, and his defense chief Sebastian Firnhaber, who played for the “Zebras” from 2013 to 2019, experienced a disappointing return. TBV Lemgo Lippe won its home game against TVB Stuttgart 29:24 (18:12), the Rhein-Necker Löwen won the game at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf 31:30 (13:15).

Lindberg new HBL record goalscorer

Hans Lindberg from Füchsen Berlin provided the highlight of the handball weekend on Saturday evening. The Danish right winger crowned himself the record scorer in the Bundesliga in the 42:35 victory of the capital club over TSV GWD Minden. With his twelve goals, the 41-year-old screwed the record to 2907 goals. The South Korean Kyung-Shin Yoon (VfL Gummersbach, HSV Hamburg) was the record holder with 2905 goals. “It’s hard to find words that describe the whole thing,” said Lindberg after the game: “At some point, when I’ve hung up my shoes, it’s obviously a nice thing.”

National coach Alfred Gislason has meanwhile spoken to his critic Karsten Günther. That’s what the 63-year-old Icelander said on Sunday during the halftime break of the league game in Magdeburg on Sky. According to a report in the news magazine Der Spiegel, Günther, managing director of SC DHfK Leipzig and a member of the HBL executive committee, is said to have even called for Gislason to be replaced. “Everyone can have their own opinion. I’ll do my thing,” said the national coach.
