This time Adesso got it. The IT service provider from Dortmund fell victim to a professional hacker attack. They were probably state hackers from Russia or China. Companies hardly stand a chance against such motivated and well-trained attackers. Therefore, being hacked is no shame. What matters is how companies deal with it when it happens. In this case, Adesso failed across the board. That the public only finds out about such hacker attacks in the rarest of cases – for free. But in this case, a whistleblower was needed for the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) to find out about it.
