Habeck and gas safety: The climate minister must ignore principles – opinion

Vladimir Putin could severely damage Germany’s economy. Habeck’s decision to temporarily rely on coal for power generation is therefore the right one – even if it is painful.

Robert Habeck is once again an impertinence for the Greens. The climate protection minister wants to turn on additional coal-fired power plants to save gas – this is what the new plan for security of supply envisages. That must be painful for a party that has been campaigning for a quick farewell to coal for many years. The climate activists are breathing down the neck of the Greens anyway, many things are going too slowly for them. For them, coal-fired power plants are symbols of self-prepared destruction. But Habeck’s decision to temporarily rely on coal for power generation is correct. There are no realistic alternatives to this painful path.
