As recently as the 1980s, 3.5 million people a year were having an experience that arguably wouldn’t even have qualified for mid-range movies in the more affluent parts of the world. They watched as a worm, up to a meter long, made its way through its body toward the wall of its lower leg, secreting substances that puckered the skin into a painful blister, from which the creature eventually burrowed. There she hung like a white string.
