Amazon is continuing its rapid expansion in Germany as well. The online mail order company announced the opening of eight new locations with more than 3000 new jobs.

The US online retailer Amazon is building eight new locations in Germany by the middle of next year. A total of more than 3,000 people should find work.

With the plans, the German logistics network is to be expanded “in order to meet customer demand and to expand the range of products,” announced the company. This should create a total of more than 3000 new, permanent jobs.

Three large logistics centers

The three planned new logistics centers are located in Dummerstorf, Helmstedt and Hof / Gattendorf. The logistics centers are the actual warehouse of Amazon, in which the products are stored after delivery, packed after the order and then shipped. It is not uncommon for them to reach a size of more than 100,000 square meters.

The delivery takes place on the one hand by classic parcel services such as DHL, Hermes, UPS and DPD. On the other hand, Amazon is increasingly delivering parcels through the Group’s own delivery service “Amazon Logistics”. In this case, Amazon uses two other types of logistics locations.

Five smaller distribution and sorting centers

In many cases, the parcels are delivered directly from the logistics centers to the so-called distribution centers. From these locations, delivery takes place directly to Amazon customers with the help of third-party companies, i.e. subcontractors of Amazon Logistics. These employ their own employees who are not employed by Amazon. Four new distribution centers are now being built in Friedrichsdorf, Neu-Ulm, Weiterstadt and Wenden.

If direct delivery from the logistics centers to the distribution centers is not possible, the so-called sorting centers come into play. These act as a link between the logistics and distribution center. A new location is being built here in Erding. In both distribution and sorting centers, the parcels are usually only for a few hours.

Of the above-mentioned locations, the centers in Friedrichsdorf, Neu-Ulm and Wenden are to be built in the current year, the others in the first half of 2022.

According to its own information, Amazon has already created around 3,000 new jobs in Germany in the past twelve months. The number of permanent employees in this country is expected to rise to more than 28,000 employees by the end of the year.
