Heavy loss for “Grey’s Anatomy”: After leading actress Ellen Pompeo, showrunner Krista Vernoff is also turning her back on the production.

“Grey’s Anatomy” veteran Krista Vernoff (51) leaves the ABC series. As reported by the “Hollywood Reporter”, among others, the showrunner will quit at the end of the current 19th season of the hospital series. Vernoff is also finished with the fire department offshoot “Station 19”. A successor for the series produced by Shonda Rhimes (53) has not yet been determined. Long-time leading actress Ellen Pompeo (53) has already announced her “Grey’s Anatomy” withdrawal and is only available for guest appearances. A 20th season has not yet been announced, but according to experts, confirmation is a mere formality.

In a statement, Vernoff spoke about her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy” without giving reasons: “It was the privilege of my life.” Vernoff was initially in charge of Grey’s Anatomy from 2007 to 2011, returning in 2017 at Rhimes’ personal request. Even now she leaves the door ajar and does not rule out a return: “So I’m not saying goodbye because that would be too bittersweet.” Referring to their long hiatus, Vernoff said with a wink, “I say, ‘See you in seven seasons.'”

Shonda Rhimes is grateful

Rhimes himself commented on Vernoff’s end. In a statement, she said their creativity, vision and leadership have enabled the series to thrive. “I’m incredibly grateful for all of their hard work,” Rhimes continued. You will always be part of the family.
