The district council approved the construction of refugee accommodation in the town of Upahl on Thursday. The district announced that the construction of the containerized facility for 400 refugees could begin. Those attending the gathering expressed their displeasure, police said.

As reported by the “NDR” and “Bild”, among others, numerous well-known right-wing extremists from the region and hooligans were among the protesters. Among the participants was a “remarkably high number of right-wing extremists, neo-Nazis, Reich citizens and football hooligans,” said a police spokesman for “Bild”. He estimated the number of violent demonstrators at “well over 100”.

As the “NDR” reports, a prostler has meanwhile gained access to the district council building under a pretext and tried to open a door from the inside to let more demonstrators in. According to the police, some participants in the demonstration tried to gain access to the building but were pushed back by the police.

The emergency services were confronted with verbal aggression. Unknown persons would also have repeatedly ignited pyrotechnics. Appropriate procedures for administrative offenses had been initiated. In addition, the suspicion of serious trespassing and violations of the Assembly Act are being investigated. Around 120 police officers from Wismar, Rostock and Neubrandenburg, among others, were deployed.
