After “Barbie” a book classic? Apparently, Greta Gerwig will take on the role of director in the “Narnia” films planned by Netflix.

Next film project for “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig (39)? As the US portal “The Hollywood Reporter” reports, the American is to direct a new feature film version of the book classic “The Chronicles of Narnia” for Netflix. Insiders announced this to the portal, but there is no official confirmation yet.

There have been rumors for a long time that the streaming provider wants to hire Gerwig as a director for the new “Narnia” films. According to The New Yorker magazine The 39-year-old has even signed a contract to write and direct two films based on CS Lewis’ “The Chronicles of Narnia”.

In 2018, Netflix announced that it had acquired the film and television rights to the famous book series. Since then there has been talk of new films and a new series being produced.

After a BBC television series that aired in the 1980s and 1990s, a trilogy of films was released in cinemas from 2005 to 2010. Disney was responsible for “The King of Narnia” (2005) and “Prince Caspian” (2008), while 20th Century Fox marketed part three “Voyage of the Dawn Treader”.

Greta Gerwig: Your well-known directing projects

With two new “Narnia” films, Greta Gerwig would expand her well-known filmography with a new, much-anticipated project. Her breakthrough as a director came with the coming-of-age film Lady Bird (2017), which earned five Oscar nominations. After that, the film adaptation of “Little Women” (2019) was released under her direction. Her “Barbie” adaptation, starring Margot Robbie (33) and Ryan Gosling (42), is currently being eagerly awaited. The film can be seen in Germany from July 20th.
