Graefelfing – The Würmtalstrasse is to become narrower – District of Munich

Suddenly it happened very quickly: From now on the Würmtalstraße between Graefelfing and Großhadern is a district road. In December, the district council decided to downgrade the previous state road. Graefelfing’s Mayor Peter Köstler (CSU) was surprised that this was now possible so quickly. It opens up new opportunities for the community to revive old plans.

According to Köstler, Würmtalstrasse – previously officially State Road 2343 – has no significance for national traffic and is not related to the state road network. It is just a short connection between Graefelfing and Großhadern. The oversized road with a total of four lanes in both directions has long been a thorn in the side of the Graefelfinger, because it invites you to drive fast. There have long been plans to rebuild the road and narrow it to one lane in each direction. Now this dismantling could finally be implemented. It is certainly easier to negotiate with the district than with the state building authority, said Köstler.

For years, the Graefelfinger have had concrete ideas about the new use of street space in the drawer. In addition to the demolition, there is the idea of building a roundabout at the level of Finkenstrasse and planning the intersection of Würmtalstrasse and Planegger as well as Pasinger and Bahnhofstrasse. The narrowing of the street would also create space for residential developments that have a noise protection function for the residential areas behind it. There is already an urban development study on this. “I’m open to everything,” said Kostler.

According to his information, there are no more specific plans in Graefelfing for the year 2022, nor are there any budget estimates. Because the downgrade was not to be expected. However, the councilors of the Graefelfing-Lochham (BVL) citizens’ association are putting pressure on them. In response to the district council decision, the parliamentary group immediately submitted a motion to “bring the existing concepts back on the table”.
