Ex-President Donald Trump does not just leave it at his allegations of alleged election fraud. Now he is also questioning the US Constitution. Even Republicans are going too far.

Former US President Donald Trump has caused outrage – including in his own ranks – by demanding that the US Constitution be overturned because of alleged fraud in the 2020 election.

The 76-year-old claimed on the social media platform Truth Social over the weekend: “A massive fraud of this type and scale allows the repeal of all rules, regulations and articles, including those in the Constitution.” Trump suggested that he himself should be declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election – or the election would have to be repeated. To this day he has not admitted his clear defeat.

The Democrats of current President Joe Biden and also Trump critics in his Republican Party rated the statements as unacceptable. Republican Liz Cheney wrote on Twitter: “No honest person can anymore deny that Trump is an enemy of the Constitution.” Republican Adam Kinzinger tweeted: “This is insane.” When the ex-president calls for the constitution to be thrown overboard, “not a single conservative can legitimately support him, and not a single supporter can be called conservative”.

Cheney and Kinzinger are among the harshest internal party critics of the ex-president who was voted out. Both are currently members of the House of Representatives, but will be stepping down at the turn of the year. The Republican leadership in Congress initially did not comment. Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden. To this day, however, he refuses to admit defeat. The right-wing populist has never substantiated his constant claims that he was deprived of a victory through massive fraud.
