British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has agreed to resign, according to reports from Sky and BBC. It is unclear whether Johnson will remain at the head of government while his Conservative Party elects a new leader to succeed him as prime minister.

As the BBC reports, Johnson wants to remain in office until the fall – until a new new party leader of the Tories is elected.

Dozens of civil servants quit in protest against Johnson

A massive wave of resignations had previously put Johnson under pressure. More than 50 high-ranking members of the government had announced their resignations since Tuesday, including several cabinet members and close associates of Johnson. The background is a whole series of scandals and affairs that the prime minister has always tried to cover up.

Most recently, even the new finance minister, Nadhim Zahawi, who only took up his post on Tuesday, had urged Johnson to resign immediately.
