Görlitz: The street festival “ViaThea” brings the grotesque to the city

Drift through the old town of Görlitz and watch acrobats and street artists from all over the world: At the “ViaThea” street festival, Jana Felgenhauer sees her hometown in a friendly light.

On a small square behind St. Peter’s Church, things get emotional. A woman on stilts, old and dressed in brightly colored rags, hobbles over cobblestones, sinks in a chair and begins to dream. A man on stilts comes along, the two seem to be getting young again, they dance together. Then the old woman is alone again. A great love, told in five minutes, without words. Tears flow in the audience. After the play, adults and children run up to the grandmother on stilts and hug her.
