The 2023 Golden Globes provided some tangible surprises and favorites that were passed over.
The prestigious Golden Globe Awards were presented in the United States on Wednesday night. The black comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” by Oscar winner Martin McDonagh (52) emerged as the big winner from the evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles with three trophies. However, there were also some tangible surprises and favorites at the awards ceremony that were passed over and had to go home without a prize. The four biggest surprises at a glance.
“Top Gun: Maverick” gets nothing
Until the mega blockbuster “Avatar: The Way of Water” started in cinemas in December last year, superstar Tom Cruise (60) was the high-flyer of the year with his late sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”. Around 1.5 billion US dollars came together at the worldwide box office – but at the Golden Globes it was not enough for a win in the top category “Best Film – Drama”. Here old master Steven Spielberg (76) prevailed with his nostalgia trip “The Fabelmans”, which starts in German cinemas on March 9th.
“Better Call Saul” star Bob Odenkirk fails to win five times
The popular Breaking Bad prequel series came to an end last year with Better Call Saul. Lead actor Bob Odenkirk (60) not only survived a heart attack during the production of season six, but also received his fifth nomination for “Best TV Lead Actor – Drama” for “Better Call Saul”. Instead, old star Kevin Costner (67), who shines in the western drama “Yellowstone” – and was not even present to receive his trophy because of a severe storm, won.
“Nothing New in the West” loses against an Argentine court drama
The German Netflix film “Nothing New in the West” was among the nominees in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category, as were the Indian action film hit “RRR” and “The Woman in the Fog” by master director Park Chan-wook (59 ). However, the rather quiet court drama “Argentina, 1985 – Never Again” by Santiago Miter (42) took home the prestigious Golden Globe. In Germany, the film about the legal processing of the Argentine military dictatorship is available on Amazon Prime Video with a subscription flat rate.
The Netflix hit “Wednesday” is completely empty
The Netflix series “Wednesday” was also not granted a win with a total of two nominations. In the category “Best Musical/Comedy Series” the mockumentary “Abbott Elementary” based on ABC and based on a fictional US elementary school prevailed instead.
“Wednesday” leading actress Jenna Ortega (20), who was traded as a solid favorite in the category “Best TV Leading Actress – Musical/Comedy”, also went away empty-handed. Ortega lost out to Quinta Brunson, 33, who is the series creator and lead actress of Abbott Elementary.
