Borussia Mönchengladbach Secures First Bundesliga Win of 2025

Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated their first victory of the year in the Bundesliga after a challenging start with three straight losses, effectively halting VfL Bochum’s recent resurgence. The Gladbachers triumphed 3-0 in a crucial match held on Saturday evening against the league’s bottom team.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 54,000 at Borussia-Park, Rocco Reitz eased the tension for the home side by netting the opening goal in the 34th minute. Following halftime, Robin Hack extended the lead with a dazzling solo effort in the 55th minute, and Tim Kleindienst capped off the night by converting a penalty in the 86th minute, securing the 3-0 victory.

Gladbach Continues Dominance Over Bochum

This win marks Borussia’s fifth consecutive victory over VfL Bochum. After a tough start to the year, where they faced three Bundesliga defeats—a situation not seen since 2014—Gladbach found their rhythm against a familiar opponent. Currently, they have no other club in the Bundesliga against which they have such a favorable streak.

Coach Gerardo Seoane praised his team’s resilience, referring to the match as a ‘maturity test’ that they successfully passed after their rocky start. He noted the previous losses had impacted the players’ confidence and morale but emphasized the importance of a strong defensive performance: “If you don’t have the flow going forward, you have to defend solidly. We managed that, and I’m happy about it.”

With this victory, Borussia Mönchengladbach climbs to eighth place in the Bundesliga table with 27 points, reigniting their hopes for a spot in international competitions.

On the flip side, Bochum, who recently celebrated two notable results—a 1-0 win over St. Pauli and a thrilling 3-3 draw against RB Leipzig—suffered another setback. They remain at the bottom of the table with only 10 points, although a pending appeal regarding their match against Union Berlin may affect their standings.

Returning to Borussia-Park, Bochum’s coach Dieter Hecking, who previously managed Gladbach from December 2016 to June 2019, expressed disappointment over his team’s performance. In a Sportschau interview, he acknowledged, “The victory for Gladbach was deserved, even by this margin.” Hecking made three changes to his lineup following the dramatic draw against Leipzig, but his team’s early confidence faded quickly. They nearly scored first when Tomas Cvancara deflected a corner onto the post in the third minute.

After the break, Gladbach came out strong while Bochum struggled to mount any significant threats. An early chance for Kleindienst went wide, but soon after, he assisted Hack, who skillfully maneuvered through defenders to score the second goal. In response, Hecking made a triple substitution, including replacing Myron Boadu after a lackluster performance.

Despite Bochum’s attempts to regain control, the Gladbachers pressed for a third goal. Hack narrowly missed his second before a foul on Nathan Ngoumou led to a penalty after VAR review. Although Kleindienst initially failed to score, he converted the follow-up, sealing the 3-0 win.

Looking ahead, Gladbach will travel to face VfB Stuttgart next week on February 1, 2025, at 3:30 PM, while VfL Bochum will host SC Freiburg at the same time.
