Giro d’Italia 2023: Mark Cavendish reports after a fall on the 5th stage – sprint star not injured worse

Astana Qazaqstan Team’s Mark Cavendish has appeared to have escaped the shock after his nasty crash on stage 5 of the 2023 Giro d’Italia.

The 37-year-old sprinter lost his balance shortly before the finish line in Salerno, fell and slid sideways across the finish line.

Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) had previously hit him in the front wheel.

“I had my wounds treated, my knee hurts a bit. I don’t think anything is broken – just my morale,” Cavendish said after returning to the team hotel.

Cavendish fall: zebra crossing is his undoing

Cavendish said he had “a perfect position” in the sprint. But then his rear wheel spun on a zebra crossing and knocked him out of balance. When he recovered, Dainese drove him in from the side.

Cavendish tried to stay on the bike, but pushed the Italian Filippo Fiorelli (Green Project-Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) into the gang and ended up falling himself.

“It’s sprinting. It’s just part of it,” said Cavendish, to whom Dainese had apologized over the phone. “I hope everyone who fell today is doing well,” said the Brit. Dainese was distanced.

When Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won, Cavendish finished fourth despite the fall. The 37-year-old is hoping for his 17th stage success at the Giro.
