Gin drinks you haven’t had 1000 times – with recipe duck

Fred’s Club in Soho, London was an institution in the 80’s. Only those who were members were allowed in – and not everyone became a member. Boy George was in and out, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Naomi Campbell and celebs like that. Behind the bar, Dick Bradsell, who was one of the most renowned bartenders in town at the time, took care of the mix in the glass. It was in those days when Bradsell invented the Gin Bramble – today the drink is a classic.

Bradsell had it in his head to develop an evergreen. He should taste British, he knew that much. Ironically, an import from France then caused the kiss of the muse. He once described in a text for the that he had his personal Madeleine moment while tasting fruit liqueurs Difford’s Guide. The memories came back with the blackberry flavor. “I was back in my childhood on the Isle of Wight picking blackberries and getting stung by the bush’s spikes,” he recalled. It was clear that the blackberry had to be in the mix. He used a Singapore Sling as a base – and the Bramble was done.

Gin Bramble – playing with flavors

The bartender himself explained the Bramble’s success by its simplicity. After all, it’s actually a gin sour with a bit of blackberry stuff. The composition follows the simple law of balancing flavors: “Take a spirit, gin, acidify it with lemon juice, sweeten it with sugar syrup and flavor it with blackberry syrup.”

The Gin Bramble went down in cocktail history. It has become so popular that some have found it hard to believe it was Bradsell who invented it. A French bartender once resisted this so vehemently that he allowed himself to be carried away by what is probably the best and most cheeky compliment Bradsell has ever received. “In his world, the drink was far too well known for someone like me to have created it,” the bartender once said. “I was so proud.”
