Germany faces Denmark in the European Championship round of 16

Status: 25.06.2024 23:36

Denmark will face the German national team in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Football Championship. This was decided by one of UEFA’s last resorts – the fair play rating. Otherwise, Denmark and Slovenia were tied on all levels.

The European Championship round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark will take place on Saturday (June 29, 2024) at 9 p.m. in Dortmund. The fact that Denmark and not Slovenia is the opponent is due to the number of yellow cards both teams have received. Slovenia has seven, Denmark only six.

Slovenia’s assistant coach Milivoje Novakovic, who was cautioned on the bench during Slovenia’s match against Denmark in Stuttgart, also contributed to this decision. Cards against team officials also count at the European Championship.

Slovenia and Denmark each had four points at the end of the group phase. Neither the head-to-head comparison (1:1), the goal difference (both 2:2) nor the number of wins (both 0) brought a decision. If the teams were tied in the fair play ranking, the overall ranking of the European Championship qualification would have decided, with Denmark ahead of Slovenia.

In the quarter-finals, Spain threatens in Stuttgart

If Nagelsmann’s team wins the round of the best 16, they will advance to the quarterfinals in Stuttgart (July 5, 2024, 6 p.m.). Their opponents there could be Spain. The Iberians have already been confirmed as group winners, but of course they also have to win their round of 16 first.

The record against Spain is extremely poor – the last victory by a DFB team was almost ten years ago – and was achieved in a friendly match. The last German victory in a tournament was in 1988 at the home European Championship (2-0).

Hard hit in the semi-finals: Portugal or France

There would be another big surprise in the semi-finals: Belgium (if they win Group E), Portugal (as winners of Group F) or the runner-up in the tough Group D – and that is France – would be in the draw. The venue for the “German” semi-final would be Munich (July 9, 2024, 9 p.m.).

Berlin, a “place of longing” – and Italy as a possible final opponent

The semi-finals will be about the “place of longing” Berlin, where the final of the European Championship 2024 will be played (July 14, 2024, 9 p.m.). Possible opponents so far: European champions Italy, Austria or Switzerland. Another possible opponent in the final would be England, if the “Three Lions” win Group C, defeat Italy as a possible opponent in the quarter-finals and prevail against Austria in the semi-finals. All fixtures and opponents in the subjunctive, of course.
