The German ESC preliminary round took place on Friday evening. Who can go to Italy for the Eurovision Song Contest?

On Friday evening “Germany 12 Points – the German ESC preliminary decision” took place. Presenter Barbara Schöneberger (47) presented the show in which it was decided which artist was allowed to represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2022 in Italy.

After the six music acts had been pre-selected by the expert jury, users were able to vote online for their favorites on the ARD radio stations. The votes from this voting influenced the result by 50 percent, with the TV audience deciding on the other 50 percent. So on Friday evening, the ESC selection process was broadcast on television and all six acts presented their songs.

Malik Harris (24) from Landsberg am Lech performed his song “Rockstars” with start number one after his father and moderator Ricky Harris (59) gave him the best wishes via video call. The 59-year-old didn’t miss his son’s appearance in the studio either. The song, a mixture of pop and rap, caused a lot of applause.

The Koblenz duo Maël & Jonas brought their song “I Swear To God” about love and friendship to the stage. The globetrotter and former “The Voice of Germany” candidate Eros Atomus (21) performed his life-affirming song “alive” with his guitar.

Text failure at Emily Roberts

The British-German musician Emily Roberts (28) briefly lost the thread on stage with her song “Soap”, according to her own statement, due to the soap bubbles around her. But you still got a good impression of the song, Schöneberger assured the perplexed singer after the performance.

The Viennese-by-choice Felicia Lu (26) is a repeat offender, she was already in the German preliminary decision in 2017. With the song “Anxiety” about worries and anxiety disorders, she addressed a current topic this time. The four-piece band Nico Suave & Team Liebe brought the performance to a close with “Hallo Welt” and also small lyrics.

Who will compete at ESC 2022?

Under the eyes of the guests of the show, ESC winner Conchita (33), presenter Thomas Hermanns (58), Jane Comerford (63) and comedian Bülent Ceylan (46), the points of the online voting and the TV voting were announced. In the end it was decided between Maël (26) and Jonas (20) and Malik Harris. Harris will be on stage for Germany at the ESC final on May 14 in Turin.

The Italian rock band Maneskin prevailed last year with their song “Zitti e buoni” and brought the competition to Italy. The German representative Jendrik Sigwart (27) finished second to last at the ESC 2021 in Rotterdam.

Ukrainian ESC winner Jamala with an emotional message

The war in Ukraine was also a topic on the ARD program before the ESC preliminary decision. On the one hand, Conchita, Schöneberger, Comerford and Gitte Haenning (75) performed the ESC song “A little peace” by Nicole (57). On the other hand, the Ukrainian singer Jamala (38), who won the ESC in 2016 with the song “1944”, made for an emotional performance and standing ovations. With the Ukrainian flag in hand, she performed her winning song to give a voice to the many affected people in her home country.
