Germany triumphed for the first time since 2009 at the U17 European Championship. The decision in the final is only made in a penalty shoot-out, with a Schalke player becoming the deciding man.

German coup at the U17 European Championship!

The DFB selection has secured the title at the European Championship for the first time since 2009 after a penalty kick thriller. Coach Christian Wück’s team defeated France 5-4 on penalties in the final in Budapest and crowned an outstanding tournament.

14 years ago, the later world champions Mario Götze, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Skhodran Mustafi triumphed at the U17 European Championship.

On Friday, Assan Ouedraogo made the decision with his converted penalty after goalkeeper Max Schmitt had kept the German team in the game with a save against Fode Sylla.

After Paris Brunner’s goal to make it 4: 4, France’s Saimon Bouabre hit the post – Schalke’s Ouedraogo then scored with nerves of steel to win.

Wück’s team could have made everything clear in the closing stages of regulation time. Bence Dardai (80′) hit the crossbar with a brilliant free kick, Noah Darvich (90’+4) frittered away a promising counterattack.

Before kick-off, the two teams had promoted a peaceful coexistence with a joint photo. The players held a banner with the message “Together against violence” in German and French in front of the cameras and demonstratively linked arms.

On the Pentecost weekend, a terrible act of violence among youth players caused horror. At an international youth tournament in Frankfurt, there was a dispute between a French and a Berlin team. A 15-year-old player from JFC Berlin suffered serious injuries and died in hospital on Wednesday.
