“Nothing New in the West” unsurprisingly lists the films that have been nominated for the German Film Prize 2023.

“Nothing New in the West” is the big winner in the nominations for the German Film Prize 2023. The Netflix war drama is up for a Lola twelve times. No other film was named so often when the German Film Academy announced the nominees on Friday (March 24). At the Oscars, “Nothing New in the West” won the world’s most important film prize just four times, including best international film.

Co-production “Holy Spider” surprised

In the main category of best film, “Nothing New in the West” competes against the school drama “The Teacher’s Room”, the gangster film “Rheingold”, the Felix Lobrecht film “Sun and Concrete”, the Joachim Meyerhoff adaptation “When will it finally come back as it was not” and “Holy Spider”. The German-Danish-French-Swedish co-production set in Iran has surprisingly been nominated four times. “Holy Spider” was the Danish entry at the Oscars.

In addition to the main prize, “Nothing New in the West” has been nominated for the camera, the music and the set design, among other things. The film also won the Oscar in these categories. Edward Berger (53) is selected as a director.

“Holy Spider”: Both main actors nominated

Felix Kammerer (27) is in the running for his film debut as best actor. In “Nothing New in the West” he plays the young soldier Paul Bäumer. His competitors for Lola are Charly Hübner (50, “Lunch Hour”) and Mehdi Bajestani (48) from “Holy Spider”.

“Holy Spider” star Zar Ami Ebrahimi (41) is nominated for the main actresses, alongside Leonie Benesch (31, “Das Klassenzimmer”) and Sandra Hüller (44, “Sisi & Ich”).

The candidates for the supporting actor are Albrecht Schuch (37, “Nothing new in the West”), Clemens Schick (51, “Servus Papa, See you in Hell”) and Karl Markovics (59, “What you can see from here”) .

The possible winners as best supporting actresses are Ulrike Kriener (68, “Simply something beautiful”), Jördis Triebel (45, “In a country that no longer exists”) and Hildegard Schmahl (83, “Lunchtime”).

Honorary award for Volker Schlöndorff

The special prize for his life’s work goes to “The Tin Drum” director Volker Schlöndorff (83). “The School of Magical Animals 2” was recognized as the most popular film of 2022.
