German environmental aid calls for higher parking fees in inner cities – Economy

Anyone who parks their car in the city center usually pays less than for a public transport ticket – or nothing at all. This prevents a real turnaround in mobility, according to the German Environmental Aid.

Parked cars would block public space at “cheap prices” or even for free and thus slow down the mobility turnaround. The German Environmental Aid is therefore demanding higher parking fees in cities. The fee for a parking ticket per hour should be at least as high as the cost of a single ticket on the bus and train.

The environmental aid had already demanded that the fees for resident parking increase. The consumer protection organization referred to a nationwide survey of 104 cities, including all major cities and the five largest cities in each federal state. According to this, parking is possible in 73 of the cities surveyed, even in paid parking zones, for one euro or less per hour.

Only the cities of Heidelberg and Osnabrück consistently demanded parking fees of at least three euros per hour in their parking zones. In 27 of the 104 cities surveyed, free parking is possible for a short time even in managed zones. On the other hand, in London, for example, an hour’s parking on the side of the road costs up to ten euros.
