For several years now, the city of Nantes and the police unions have been calling for additional national police resources to stem the rise in crime in the City of the Dukes. The visit of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, this Thursday afternoon in Nantes, was therefore particularly expected. And he did not come empty-handed.

Some 70 additional national police posts will thus be “created within two years”, he announced, as part of a “Integrated security contract” signed between the municipality and the state. A rise in power since 40 positions had been created in the last three years. These new police officers will be assigned “on the public highway”.

For her part, the mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, confirmed her commitment to recruit 70 municipal police officers in the new municipal mandate (2020-2026) but, this time, specified that they will all be operational “from 2023”. About thirty are already being installed.

But also cameras, mediators, community service …

But the “integrated security contract” is not limited to these additional police officers. It also provides for the commissioning of thirty additional video-protection cameras, the creation of a “public space management brigade” which will fight against incivility, a “strengthening of local justice” with an intervention increased number of “prosecutor’s delegates”, an increase in the number of people hosted by the city for the performance of community service, or even the creation of two mediators in colleges to “help in conflict resolution”.

“I welcome the signing of this contract. Safety is a priority. and when the city puts 70 additional police officers, the state does the same. It is done in clarity. It is therefore an important step which has just been taken ”, comments Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes.

“The city of Nantes is the second large French city to sign this contract with the State”, points out Gérald Darmanin.
