Today’s event: George Lucas in master class
There were big crowds to attend the master class given by George Lucas this Friday, May 24. The creator of the Star Wars saga returned to the entire history of the creation of his cult work but also to several subjects that are close to his heart. He spoke in particular about the recent evolution in the way film studios operate which, according to him, leave too much room for the opinions of fans and too little for the desires of filmmakers… He also proclaimed that “yes”, he admits to having made children’s films with the Star Wars prelogy. Ten years after having “abandoned” the rights to his work to Disney and more than 50 years after his first visit to Cannes, George Lucas rose to the rank of festival master with this master class.

Film of the day: “The most precious of goods” by Michel Hazanavicius
Two years after opening the festival with his film Cut!Michel Hazanavicius returns to Cannes with his first animated feature film The most valuable commodity. The French filmmaker adapts the novel by Jean-Claude Grumberg, which followed the story, in the form of a moral tale, of a couple of lumberjacks who take in a baby thrown out of the windows of one of the many trains which constantly pass through their forest. The Holocaust serves as the backdrop to this story about human nature. A subject that Michel Hazanavicius said he did not want to film. “I promised myself not to make a film on the Shoah for personal reasons, because my family comes from that history,” he explained at the Annecy festival in June 2022.

Photo of the day: Mohammad Rasoulof holds up photos of his actors
Filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, who has just fled Iran, received a standing ovation on Friday upon his arrival in the gala hall of the Cannes Film Festival, where his film is being screened, The seeds of the wild fig treein the running for the Palme d’Or.
The presence in Cannes of the filmmaker, pursued by the Iranian regime who deprived him of his passport and sentenced him to prison, is a symbol for freedom of expression.
Only part of the film crew was able to leave Iran. On the red carpet and then in the room, Mohammad Rasoulof held up photos of two of his main actors, Missagh Zareh and Soheila Golestani.
He took the steps alongside Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani, who has lived in exile in France for around fifteen years.
