Germany should secure as much gas as possible for the next year, demands Katherina Reiche. The Westenergie boss and ex-CDU politician on impending bottlenecks, the increasing importance of hydrogen and the heat transition.

From her office on the 25th floor of the former RWE tower in Essen, Katherina Reiche has a spectacular view over large parts of the Ruhr area. For almost three years, the qualified chemist and longstanding CDU State Secretary in the Federal Environment and Transport Ministries has been managing the Eon subsidiary Westenergie with millions of customers in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony. The company’s natural gas network is 37,000 kilometers long, while the electricity network would stretch 196,000 kilometers around the world almost five times.
