Gary Glitter back in jail after breaching conditions

Just five weeks after his release from prison, British ex-pop star Gary Glitter, convicted of child abuse, has to go back to prison. The 78-year-old violated his conditions, said the probation service. Details were not given. “Protecting the public is our priority,” a spokesman for the authorities told Sky News. “That’s why we set tough conditions, and when criminals break them, we don’t hesitate to put them back in jail.”

The former glam rock star, who became known in the early 1970s, was released on February 3. He had served half his sentence. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison in February 2015 for several cases dating back to the 1970s. One of the victims is said to have been less than ten years old.

A jury in a London court found Glitter guilty. The judge accused the 70-year-old at the verdict that he had shown little remorse. He had caused “real and lasting damage” to his victims, said then the chairman Alistair McCreath when the sentence was announced.

In the UK it is common for a halfway sentence to be suspended on probation. There were protests against the release.

Conviction for possession of child pornography material

In 1999, Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was sentenced to four months in prison in the UK for possession of child pornography. After his release, he fled to Cuba and Cambodia. There he was tolerated rather reluctantly by the authorities and finally expelled after repeated press reports about his crimes.

In 2006, he was sentenced to three years in prison in Vietnam for molesting two underage girls. He always denied the fact. After his release in 2008, he was required to put himself on a sex offenders’ register back in London and tell police his whereabouts.

Glitter was arrested again in 2012 in connection with the child molestation scandal involving former BBC presenter Jimmy Savile, who died in 2011. He was accused of molesting a girl in Savile’s dressing room. He denied this and was released on bail.
