Garching – pensioners fall for Whatsapp scammers – district of Munich

A man in Garching fell for fraudsters on Sunday and lost several thousand euros in the process. According to the police, the 75-year-old had received a message via a messenger service in the morning. The author posed as his daughter, described an emergency situation and asked for two bills to be paid. The pensioner then made the transfers. But then things struck him as strange and he contacted his daughter on the known number. This confirmed his suspicion that it was a scam. Commissariat 76 for fraud at the Munich police headquarters has taken over the investigation. The police urgently warns of this current scam, in which unknown perpetrators make contact via messenger services and pretend to be relatives who allegedly have a new phone number and need money to get out of an emergency. The police advise those affected to always first call their relatives on the known number or, if in doubt, to inform the police.
