The two state parliament members of the Greens from the district, Claudia Köhler and Markus Büchler, are calling for the consequences of the kerosene accident on the TU research campus in Garching. There, in mid-July, more than 5000 liters of the environmentally hazardous fuel that the TU uses in turbine research leaked from an underground tank and reached the groundwater through the ground. Fortunately, the kerosene had not spread very quickly in the groundwater; With the help of remediation wells, the contaminated water is currently being pumped out of the ground and cleaned. Three measuring points set up by experts in the downstream are intended to ensure that no polluted water flows into the Isar.
The pumping system, which pumps the kerosene from the tank to a laboratory if necessary, was replaced by a specialist company shortly before the incident. The police are still checking whether there were any errors when connecting or whether a technical defect was the cause of the accident. However, there is criticism of the late reporting of the incident by the TU. A sensor on the tank had already issued an internal warning on the weekend of the leak, but this had failed; an employee only discovered the damage on Monday. On Tuesday noon, the university informed the district office. In view of this, the Greens are calling for a safety check for all systems with hazardous substances at the TU, as well as detailed information on all damage that has occurred.
