The European Athletics Championships in Rome last six days. These competitions are likely to be particularly interesting from a German perspective until next Wednesday.

With hopes of medals in various competitions, the approximately 110 German starters will go into the European Athletics Championships from Friday to Wednesday in Rome. A brief overview of the highlights:

Friday, June 7:

Discus, men (9 p.m./ARD): The top field with world record holder Mykolas Alekna from Lithuania promises a high-class competition in which the German trio Henrik Janssen, Clemens Prüfer and Mika Sosna would like to get involved.

Shot put, women (9.33 p.m./ARD): Yemisi Ogunleye from Mannheim is one of Germany’s great hopes for a medal after winning silver at the World Championships indoors.

Saturday, June 8:

20 kilometer walk, men (6:00 p.m./ZDF): After European Championship silver over 35 kilometers and World Championship fifth place over 20 kilometers, Christopher Linke from Potsdam is once again counting on something.

Discus, women (9.37 p.m./ZDF): Even without Olympic and European Championship runner-up Kristin Pudenz, the German trio Shanice Craft, Marike Steinacker and Claudine Vita have good chances.

100 meters, men (10:53 p.m./ZDF): The Italian fans are hoping for Olympic champion and defending champion Marcell Jacobs, but the local hero is not the favorite after the season so far.

Sunday, June 9:

Half marathon, men (9:00 a.m./ARD), women (9:30 a.m./ARD): Instead of a marathon, only half the distance will be run two months before the Olympics. In the race for individual and team medals, European marathon champion Richard Ringer and German record holder Amanal Petros are among those taking part.

3000 meter steeplechase, women (10:04 p.m./ARD): Gesa Felicitas Krause is back after her maternity leave, the two-time European champion goes into the European Championships as Europe’s fastest, where European Championship runner-up Lea Meyer and Olivia Gürth also give hope.

100 meters, women (10:53 p.m./ARD): Two years after winning gold at the European Championships in the individual and relay races, all eyes are on Gina Lückenkemper, who, as defending champion, is the hunted one this time.

Monday, June 10:

200 meters, men (10:50 p.m./ZDF): German record holder Joshua Hartmann has an outside chance if everything goes perfectly for him.

Tuesday, June 11:

Decathlon, men (10:25 p.m./ARD): Niklas Kaul’s comeback to gold was one of the big moments of the 2022 European Championships in Munich, but the competition is also fierce again in Rome.

Wednesday, June 12:

Pole vault, men (8.20 p.m./ZDF): Defending champion Armand “Mondo” Duplantis from Sweden is always good for a world record, European Championship runner-up Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, Torben Blech and Oleg Zernikel can compete for a medal on a good evening.

Javelin throw, men (8:28 p.m./ZDF): Julian Weber wants to repeat his triumph from Munich, and his toughest competitors are again the Czech Jakub Vadlejch – and perhaps the German talent Max Dehning.

Long jump, women (8:54 p.m./ZDF): Malaika Mihambo is back after her injury last year and, as always, is one of the candidates for a medal; there are also German competitors in Mikaelle Assani and Laura Raquel Müller.

4×100 meters, women (10.38 p.m./ZDF): The German relay team around Gina Lückenkemper would like to repeat the gold moment from 2022, but Alexandra Burghardt is missing from the quartet this time.
