In Munich, the immersive art experience “Viva Frida Kahlo” was a complete success, now the world of the artist is being rebuilt in Hamburg.

The world of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) moves on: after Munich was allowed to immerse itself in an immersive exhibition experience by the artist at the beginning of the year, it is now Hamburg’s turn.

In contrast to ordinary exhibitions in which the paintings hang on the wall, “Viva Frida Kahlo” invites you to experience the painter’s works through large-scale projections that spill over the walls and floor. Over an area of up to ten meters, viewers are brought closer to Kahlo’s art and life in an intensive, new way.

While the visitors immerse themselves in the colors and forms of the paintings, a voice in the role of Frida Kahlo guides them through the life, views and feelings of the painter with original quotations. The experience is also accompanied acoustically by a specially composed soundtrack.

In addition, a virtual reality experience awaits art lovers in Hamburg for the first time, during which they can take a journey through the symbolism and dreams of Frida Kahlo. The exhibition not only shows the pictures of what is probably the most important artist in Latin America and tells her life story, but also takes the viewer to Mexico in the “Casa Azul”. The blue house was Kahlo’s place of birth and death and for a long time the most important center of his life. There she started painting at the age of 18 after a serious accident with the help of a mirror over her bed. The original house in Mexico City is one of the most famous museums in the country. In Hamburg, the facade of the “Casa Azul” is now being built, which invites you to linger with its inner courtyard.

Sold out in Munich for weeks

In the Bavarian capital, the “Viva Frida Kahlo” exhibition was sold out for weeks, 111,000 visitors immersed themselves in the artist’s pictures with the help of video projections. From April 19, art enthusiasts and fans can now enjoy the world of Kahlo in the Hanseatic city.

Frida Kahlo is one of the most well-known artists of all time, her paintings achieve millions in price. The self-portraits of the “icon of feminism” with a wreath of flowers and a monobrow adorn not only their own canvases, but also countless mugs, T-shirts and bags. Her impressive life story also won two Oscars as the Hollywood film “Frida” starring Salma Hayek (56).
