As Donald Trump made a campaign appearance in Southern California over the weekend, a 49-year-old man was caught in a nearby security checkpoint. In his car, the police found, among other things, a loaded pistol and plenty of ammunition.
An armed man was arrested at a security checkpoint near a campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in California on Saturday. “The incident had no impact on the safety of former President Trump or those attending the event,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said a day later. The 49-year-old from Las Vegas was stopped by officers in a black SUV and taken into custody without incident.
When authorities searched the car, they found a shotgun, a loaded pistol and a large magazine of ammunition. In California, firearms can only be transported unloaded in a car. The man was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court in early January. The authorities have not yet provided any information about the man’s motives or possible connections to previous incidents.
The incident is part of a series of security threats against the Republican presidential candidate. On July 13, Trump was assassinated during a campaign appearance in the small town of Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman, who was later shot by the Secret Service, narrowly missed the 78-year-old Republican. Trump suffered minor injuries to his ear.
Another incident occurred in mid-September when a man with a rifle hid in the bushes on the edge of Trump’s golf course. The 58-year-old was arrested and charged with the attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
