Franz Beckenbauer, German football legend and the best German footballer of all time, is dead. On the last match day, the Bundesliga remembered the emperor with a minute’s silence and other tributes. In the center circle of the arenas, a large, round banner was rolled out that showed Beckenbauer as a player – next to it was the Bundesliga logo and a mourning ribbon. “Rest in peace, Kaiser,” for example, was written on the scoreboard during the game between 1. FC Köln and 1. FC Heidenheim. Teams wore mourning ribbon. The start of the 17th matchday between FC Bayern Munich and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim was in memory of the greatest German footballer, who died last Sunday at the age of 78.
There will be a big memorial ceremony for FC Bayern, at which the Munich native became a legend as a player, coach and president, with numerous guests of honor from politics, culture and sport as well as numerous companions in the Allianz Arena on Friday next week. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will take part and give a speech. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) will also be there in Munich.Note: The photo series first appeared on capital.de.
