The President pushed his pension reform past Parliament. The opposition therefore submitted two motions of no confidence in the government – and only narrowly failed. The law has been passed, but the trouble is not over.

French President Emmanuel Macron can breathe easy, at least for the moment. Two no-confidence votes against his government failed in parliament on Monday. A majority of MPs voted against the corresponding motions from the opposition. Macron’s controversial pension reform is therefore accepted. And Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and her cabinet will remain in office.
