France – champagne for Russia – economy

In the sparkling wine dispute with Russia, France’s champagne industry has apparently given in. The trade association CIVC wants to allow champagne exports to Russia again from September 15, reports the magazine Terre de vins. In protest against a new Russian law, the association asked producers in July not to sell their drops to Russia for the time being. The law stipulates that the Cyrillic name “Schampanskoje” (“Champagne”) is reserved for Russian sparkling wine. Foreign products are only allowed to be sold as “sparkling wine”. The CIVC now sees an increased awareness of protected indications of origin.
